On This Earth Day; Dropping into the Depths
Oceans
I have a feeling that my boat
has struck, down there in the depths,
against a great thing.
And nothing
happens! Nothing...Silence...Waves...
--Nothing happens? Or has everything happened,
and are we standing now, quietly, in the new life?
—Juan Ramon Jimenez, translated by Robert Bly
This poem has showed up for a few classes this week. Despite Earth Day, I find myself more attuned to the feeling of deep sea diving, and the exploration of the ocean's fertile depths. The feeling of dropping in, the image of vast, quiet, watery currents that offer up only emptiness....to this I relate. At times this is a deeply comforting place of stillness and reflection. The emptiness feels textured and full of potential. At other times those same depths feel more like drowning and feel myself pulled toward sadness and despair. What is this great thing, this great psychic hull that I am bumping up against, and is this great silence—sometimes comforting, sometimes terrifying—the new normal?? Maybe you share some of this discomfort with your own internal explorations and solitariness. Maybe we are experiencing the great questions right now, collectively and in isolation, and answers are beside the point. Our practices of yoga and meditation offer up a daily opportunity to dwell in the mystery, to feel the great questions, and to soak in the experience of guided exploration.
