RestoringThere's a whole lot of restoring going on around here. If you take a look at our events line up, you will see that there are multiple opportunities to practice restorative yoga in the near future, starting with tonight's First Friday class. While I do put a fair amount of thought into designing the regular schedule, things also have a way of falling into their own shape, with teachers approaching me about teaching particular workshops or classes. Happy May Day!In the ancient Celtic calendar, May Day, or Beltane, is celebrated to usher in the light half of the year, a time of fertility and abundance. In the standard calendar, this happens on May 1. Celebrations include bonfires to honor the solar god, rites of cleansing and purification, and collecting flowers to symbolize the richness of Spring. ...and of course, the Maypole: during this festival boys and girls would traditionally dance in opposite directions holding the end of a colored ribbon of the Maypol. . . Gentle Yoga, Yoga for Beginners....What's the Difference?I've been getting this question a lot lately from students who practice regularly at UVY and from people who've never taken a yoga class in their life, calling to ask which class is best for a newcomer. Yoga on the BrainMarch is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Which is fitting because Saturday marked the sixth anniversary of my stroke. In the months following my injury, I struggled with walking, concentration, sensory and information processing, and managing over-stimulation. Alongside physical therapy, a regular yoga and meditation practice were the biggest source of support for developing new connections in my brain, and rebuilding strength, balance, and coordination. The Ground we Play onI love to nordic ski but haven't done much of it in the past 5 years. Partly because of residual balance challenges following brain surgery in 2011 that make the world a little wobbly for me, partly because of my problematic right shoulder, which twinges with too much repetitive movement.
